Irene Stegun

Irene Anne Stegun ( born February 9, 1919 in Yonkers, New York, † January 27, 2008 in Danbury (Connecticut) ) was an American mathematician.

In 1941, she received her master's degree at Columbia University. Since 1943 she worked at the National Bureau of Standards ( NBS). As the head of the Handbook project, Milton Abramowitz, died in July 1958, she took over the line and put it 1964 ready. She herself wrote the chapter Legendre Functions and Miscellaneous Functions.

She is best known for her book, Handbook of Mathematical Functions with Formulas, Graphs, and Mathematical Tables.
