Swamp Iris

The Swamp Iris (Iris pseudacorus ), also known as Yellow Iris, is a flowering plant in the family of Iris Family ( Iridaceae ). It is a native of Europe to western Siberia marsh plant.

Description

The Swamp Sword lily grows as a perennial, herbaceous plant that can reach stature heights of 1 to 2 m. It forms a thick, horizontally creeping rhizome ( " rhizome " ) as Überdauerungsorgan. The gray-green, sword-shaped, lineal leaves are up to 90 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, with strong midrib and are arranged in two rows.

It flowers from late May to June. The inflorescence contains only a single flower. Have the yellow, hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, flowers threefold, as with all irises, three dark- veined leaves hanging and three upright Domblätter. It forms cylindrical, insulated draft tube capsule fruits that are 4-8 cm long and contain many seeds.

Occurrence and risk

Spread the marsh iris is in large parts of western Eurasia. In North America, it was introduced in the mid-19th century as an ornamental plant and has now spread over most of the continent. In Germany it is found in almost all regions and missing only in the higher mountain areas.

Marsh irises are on the banks and standing and flowing waters in the landing areas, found in bogs and swamp forests.

As the site preferably the marsh iris a sunny to light shady place that is wet or damp. Especially well it prospers directly in the water up to 20 cm - tolerates quite well up to 40 cm depth at which they but not so much in bloom. Particularly suitable are heavy clay soils.

The marsh iris is often located at new sites in the wild ( Ansalbung ). This application shall be remeasured as Flore corruption and prohibited without permission according to § 41 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Your inventory is not considered endangered, but is classified as special protection under federal species protection regulation.

Use

The marsh iris is scattered used as an ornamental plant for water shore. It is in culture at least since 1561. There are some varieties (selection):

  • Pallida: The flowers are pale yellow and the Domblätter longer.
  • Variegata: The leaves are longitudinally striped white.

There are also known varieties with double flowers.

All plant parts are poisonous. The highest concentration is in the rhizomes, which also contain tannins. The plant was formerly used for various medicinal purposes.
