Iron (II ) acetate is a chemical compound of the iron from the group of acetates.
Production and representation
Iron (II ) acetate may be obtained by reaction of iron with acetic acid.
Properties
Iron (II ) acetate is a light brown to almost white, air-and moisture -sensitive solid which is insoluble in water. His tetrahydrate is soluble in water and ethanol and has a green to brown ( by oxidation ) color. Iron (II ) acetate crystallizes in the space group Pbcn and as a 2D coordination polymer of iron atoms and acetate groups.
Use
Iron (II ) acetate is used as additive in paints and as seed dressings. It also serves as a catalyst in organic chemistry and as a starting material for other iron compounds (such as iron complexes ). The tetrahydrate is used as a dye for textiles and leather, medicine and as a wood preservative.
