Irvin Cohen

Irvin Sol Cohen ( * 1917, † February 14, 1955 ) was an American mathematician.

Cohen in 1942 with Oscar Zariski at Johns Hopkins University PhD (The Structure and Ideal Theory of Local Rings ). From 1948 he worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he became a professor.

Cohen dealt primarily with commutative algebra. According to him and Francis Macaulay (formed from his dissertation ) Cohen- Macaulay rings are named and going back to him, and Abraham Seidenberg sets of Cohen- Seidenberg.
