IS-IS

IS- IS ( Intermediate System to Intermediate System Protocol) is a link-state Interior Gateway Protocol (similar to OSPF), which is specified by the ISO 10589. Originally (1992 ) was designed for use with the connectionless protocol CLNP IS-IS, support for the use of IP was made possible through extensions.

IS- IS uses four message types:

Since the mid- 90s experienced IS-IS a renaissance in American and European operators. The reason for this can be seen in the very minimalist and therefore very easy to implement protocol architecture. Moreover, the first IS-IS implementation by the manufacturer Cisco was much more robust than, for example, the OSPF implementation, which many network operators has moved to use the IS- IS protocol.
