Isaac

Isaac (Hebrew: יִצְחָק yiṣḥāq, probably from Jizchaq -El = God smiles ) is a central figure of the Jewish faith. His story is told in Genesis (Gen 21-28 EU). He lived by the biblical narratives about the 19th century BC, but nothing about him is known extra-Biblical. Together with his father Abraham and his son Jacob, he is considered one of the patriarchs of Israel.

Name

The name comes Jizchaq in the Bible exclusively for the patriarch. Extra-Biblical it is not previously occupied, and there is no evidence for corresponding names inscriptions. The name is probably a short or pet form of Jizchaq -El, which means " El smiles ( the child )" or " El has brought laughter to someone " means. El is in the Hebrew Bible, a name of God. In Gen 21.3 to 6 EU Isaac gets its name after it was previously told on several occasions that his birth is actually impossible because of the age of his parents, Abraham and Sarah and their announcement by divine promise with their parents each gave rise to a laugh (Gen 17:17 EU; 18.12 to 15 EU; 21.6 ).

Biblical tradition

About Isaac is narrated by the three patriarchs of the least biblical. He is the second son of Abraham, the only one he fathered with his wife Sara. At the age of eight days, Isaac is circumcised. Abraham is asked by God to the test by having to sacrifice his son Isaac ( Gen 22 EU) (Hebrew: akeda ). Abraham obeyed and he and his son on their way to the land of Moriah. There he built an altar, and laid it binds Isaac to sacrifice him. An angel of God intervenes at the last moment, Abraham explains the sample and confirmed to him and his descendants eternal blessing. (Gen 22.16 to 18 EU)

After the death of his wife, Sarah, Abraham sends his oldest servant to his home in the area of Haran to search for Isaac a wife. Once you reach the city asks the servant of God for a sign which woman was destined for Isaac. The woman who will give him to drink and his camels to be the chosen one. Before he can finish his request to speak, Rebecca, a granddaughter of Nahor, Abraham's brother appears, and do as asked. She and her parents consent to the marriage agreement, and Rebekah draws the servant back to Canaan.

Isaac is 40 years old when he married Rebekah. Before Abraham dies, he is the sole heir to a Isaac and sends the sons of his concubines with gifts away. Isaac is doing in all, as God commanded him, and thereby acquires great wealth. After he had reaped a hundredfold in a year and had become very rich, send it to the Philistines, near which he lives away. Rebecca is 20 years long childless, then gets However, after a prayer of Isaac, twins Esau and Jacob. Even before the birth of God tells Rebekah that the firstborn son will serve the younger later. Jacob must then flee hate Esau before, about 20 years later, the two are reconciled, however, again. After Isaac died at the age of 180 years, he will be buried together by his two sons. (Gen 35,29 EU)

Isaac in Christianity

The role of Isaac in Christianity is less important than in Judaism. In the New Testament the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth is attributed to Abraham - Isaac and Rebekah. Thus Christianity reclaims its share of the biblical- historical tradition that had been given to the patriarchs of Israel since Abraham. His feast day in the calendar of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod is the 16th August.

Isaac in Islam

Also in the Quran Ishaq (Arabic إسحاق, DMG Ishaq ) is mentioned. For that places local representation is Isaac but Ishmael behind, that of Abraham (Arabic: Ibrahim ) with Hagar, Sarah's handmaid, conceived firstborn son back (Sura 14:39; 2.125-140 ). The presentation of the Koran mentions the report of the interruption of Abraham's sacrifice of his son no name and also does not mention the " only" son as the representation in gene 22; in follow-up with the announcement of the birth of Isaac (Surah 37.112 ). Later Islamic scholars such as Ibn Katheer have argued that it could well have been here only for Ishmael; This view is now widely common among Muslims.
