Isabella, Countess of Gloucester

Isabel of Gloucester ( † October 14, 1217 ) was the first wife of the future King of England John Lackland. She is also known by a number of other names, including Hadwisa, Hawise, Joan, Eleanor, Avise and Avisa.

Isabel was the daughter of William FitzRobert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester, and his wife Hawise. Her father died in 1183 without male descendants, so that the title passed to the crown. A new award in 1186 they then made Countess of Gloucester.

On August 29, 1189, she married in Marlborough Castle ( Wiltshire) Prince John, then Earl of Cornwall, then the title of Earl of Gloucester in their name led ( Jure uxoris ). This marriage was decided on September 28, 1176 between her father and Henry II. Isabel married on January 20, 1214 in second marriage FitzGeoffrey Geoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex, and after his death in 1216 his third wife in September 1217, Hubert de Burgh, the future Earl of Kent. Isabel died a few weeks later and was buried in the Cathedral of Canterbury.
