Isabella of Mar

Isabella of Mar ( * ca 1277, † 1296 ) was the first wife of the Scottish King Robert I ( Robert the Bruce ).

She was the daughter of Donald, 6th Earl of Mar and a woman named Ellen, who had previously been the wife of Malcolm Macduff, 7th Earl of Fife. Isabella spoke both Gaelic as well as English. Their lands were for the most part north-east of Inverness.

At the time (1295 ) of their arranged marriage with Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick at that time, Isabella was a wealthy young woman. Her father was the first who supported the claim of her husband to the Scottish throne. Shortly after the marriage, the 18- year-old was pregnant. The pregnancy proceeded without difficulties, but shortly after the birth of her child, she died as a result of been necessary Caesarean section. Six years later, Robert married his second wife, Elizabeth de Burgh.

Isabella's daughter, Princess Marjorie Bruce († 1316), married Walter Stewart, the Steward of Scotland. Their son Robert II ascended the Scottish throne. Of him the monarch of the House of Stuart originate from or indirectly by the other royal dynasties of Scotland and England.
