Isabelle Vengerova

Isabelle Vengerova (Russian Изабелла Афанасьевна Венгерова; * 17 Februarjul / March 1 1877greg in Minsk, .. † February 7, 1956 in New York) was a Russian-Jewish pianist and music teacher.

Life

Isabelle Vengerova is the daughter of the author Pauline Wengeroff. She studied piano at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna with Josef Dachs and privately with Theodor Leschetizky, then in Saint Petersburg at Anna Nikolaevna Jessipowa.

1906 to 1920 she taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, 1920 to 1923 she was on concert tours throughout the USSR and Western Europe, after which they settled in the United States.

She was co-founder of the Curtis Institute in 1924 and taught there piano, from 1933 also at the Mannes College.

Her students included, inter alia, Ralph Berkowitz, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Lukas Foss, Anthony di Bonaventura, Gary Graffman, Lilian Kallir, Virginia Reinecke, Joseph Rezits, Abbey Simon, Gilbert Kalish, Jacob Latins and Leonard Pennario.

She was the aunt and first teacher of Nicolas Slonimsky.
