Isfara

Isfara ( Tajik / Russian Исфара, Persian اسفره ) is a city in Tajikistan and is located in Sughd province, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Isfara is the capital of the eponymous district Isfara.

History

The first name was Isfaras " Asbara ". Isfara is one of the oldest cities of Central Asia and was first mentioned in the 10th century by the Islamic scholar al-Tabari, as Isfara was an important stopover on the northern Silk Road. From this period also dates back a mausoleum in the city, the Hazrati Shoh Mausoleum. Also the founder of the Mughal Empire in India, Babur (1482-1530), Isfara called one of the most important cities in the region.

In the 16th and 17th centuries in the city originated many larger, public buildings, such as mosques and madrasas. In the 17th century Isfara was also part of the Khanate of Kokand. As the area of ​​today's Tajikistan in 1868 became a Russian colony, the influence of Russian culture took too strong.
