Isidor Hilberg

Isidor Hilberg ( born May 28, 1852 in Bila Tserkva, Ukraine, † 1919 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist ( Hellenist ).

Life

As a four year old he came with his Jewish parents to Vienna. At the University of Vienna, he studied classical philology at John Vahlen, Theodor Gomperzes, Johann Joseph Hoffmann and Wilhelm von Hartel. In 1874, he became the Dr. phil. doctorate.

Since 1877, habilitated lecturer, he was in 1879 as ao Professor at the still undivided Charles University in Prague called. In September 1882 he was appointed the Franz Joseph University in Czernowitz to the chair of classical philology. 1897/98 he was rector of the university.
