Iskandar of Johor

Sultan Mahmud Iskandar Al- Haj ibni Ismail Al- Khalidi ( born April 8, 1932 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia; † January 22, 2010 ibid ) was April 26, 1984 to April 25, 1989, the eighth Yang di - Pertuan Agong ( King of Malaysia). From 1981 until his death he was the 24th Sultan of Johor. He was a lover of polo, golf and hunting.

Life

Iskandar of Johor was born in 1932 as the son of Sultan Ismail and was thus a descendant of Sultan Abu Bakar. In 1956 he married the British Josephine Trevorrow, the marriage was divorced in 1962. The marriage produced four children. Shortly before the divorce from his first wife, he married Tengku Zanariah, who came from the noble family of Kelantan.

On 11 May 1981 he was proclaimed the 24th Sultan of Johor and on 9 February 1984, he was elected for five years to the king of Malaysia. Coup plans

Arrived just before his election to the Yang di- Pertuan Agong in 1984 years to 1983 reports of alleged coup plans. Gomez- incident

In 1992, the Sultan was directly and indirectly involved in two affairs. The one affair concerned Tunku Abdul Majid Idris his son, who attacked the goalkeeper of the opposing team with a hockey stick out of frustration over the defeat in a hockey game. The Malaysian Hockey Federation took on the case and finally the son of Iskandar got a five years suspension. When Tunku Abdul Majid a criminal was sentenced to one year in prison and 2000 Malaysian ringgit. He was released on bail and due to its immunity, which was still considered time of the offense, all charges were dropped.

In response to the pronounced against his son match suspension, exercised the Sultan pressure on the authorities that hockey teams from Johor stay away from the national competitions. A coach of a hockey team from the state of Johor, Douglas Gomez, expressed displeasure in November 1992 on the forced absence of national competitions. This incident became known nationally as " Gomez Incident ".

On 22 January 2010 Iskandar died at the age of 77 years in his birthplace of Johor Bahru.
