Isla Ángel de la Guarda

The Isla Ángel de la Guarda ( Seri: Xazl IIMT ), with an area of 931 km ² according to the Isla Tiburón, the second largest island in the Gulf of California. It is part of the Mexican state of Baja California, where the municipality of Mexicali, district ( delegación ) San Felipe. The 69 km long and up to 1315 m high island is located east of the bay Bahía de los Ángeles near the Isla Tiburón.

Due to the very arid climate and lack of drinking water, the island is uninhabited. However, it is rich in animal species that have adapted to drought, such as lizards or snakes. Among them is the Angel de la Guarda on endemic rattlesnake species ( Crotalus angelensis ). The island is a nature reserve.
