Isla Contoy

The Isla Contoy is a small island off the coast of Yucatan in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is located about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres between the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It covers an area of ​​only 3.17 square kilometers with a length of 8.5 km.

The island is due to the lack of freshwater uninhabited and home to more than 150 different bird species, including Pelicans, frigate birds and cormorants. The Isla Contoy is breeding ground for sea turtles and flamingos are there as well at home as exotic fish species off the coast.

Isla Contoy is protected by the Mexican government since 1961 and was declared in February 1998 to the National Park.

Only supervised ecotourism is permitted daily and only 200 people are allowed to visit Isla Contoy. Day trips will take place from Puerto Juarez to the north of Cancun or Isla Mujeres.
