Ismael Blas Rolón Silvero

Ismael Blas Rolón Silvero SDB ( born January 24, 1914 in Caazapá, Paraguay, † June 8, 2010 in Asunción, Paraguay) was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Asunción. Ismael Rolón played a key role in the overthrow of the regime of Alfredo Stroessner and the establishment of democracy in Paraguay.

Life

Ismael Blas Rolón Silvero, one of nine siblings, visited in 1927 with only 13 years, the College of the Salesians in Montevideo, joined in 1931 the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1932 and made ​​his profession. After further studies in theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and at the Universidad Católica de Córdoba in Cordoba, Argentina, he received on 23 November 1941, the ordination. Work

Ismael Rolón was a committed opponent of the dictatorial regime of Alfredo Stroessner and Andrés Rodríguez. He is regarded as a champion of human rights and freedom of expression and a central figure in the enforcement of fundamental rights in Paraguay. He was significantly involved in the overthrow of the regime of dictator Alfredo Stroessner.

For his services he was for Paraguay in 1995 and in 2010 awarded the Order Nacional del Mérito, en el Grado de Gran Cruz.
