Ismael Nery

Ismael Nery ( born October 9, 1900 in Belém, State of Pará, Brazil, † April 6, 1934 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was a Brazilian modernist painters. He was Expressionist, Surrealist and Cubist. In addition, he also worked as a lyricist.

Life

At the age of nine he lost his father at age 18 his brother. Also at the age of nine years, the family moved to Rio de Janeiro. At 15, he enrolled in the Escola de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied until 1920. Followed in 1920, a first stay in Paris, where he remained for a year and studied at the Académie Julian. In 1927 he came a second time to Paris, where he even met there with Marc Chagall and André Breton. This was followed by appearances on " Salão de 1931 ", the " Salão Revolucionario " in 1931 and 1933 on 3 Salão de Sociedade Pró -Arte Moderna.

After a trip to Argentina and Uruguay in late 1929 he fell ill with tuberculosis in 1930. The illness prevented him greatly to continue his artistic work. It was followed by many hospital stays. In 1932 he published his autobiography entitled " Historia de Ismael Nery - uma melancholia autobiografia " ( History of Ismael Nery - a sad autobiography).

He was the poet and journalist Adalgisa Nery (1905-1980), who stood as his muse and model available to married. The couple had two children.

A resulting in 1979 Documentation deals with the life and work of the painter. One of his closest and best friends was the poet Murilo Mendes.

On April 6, 1934, he died of complications from tuberculosis disease in his apartment. Nery saw himself as a man always an internationalist, but at the same time as a devout Catholic, which was not a contradiction for him.

Work

As a painter, he is known as one of the most important modernists of the Brazilian painting. His work was characterized by cubist, surrealist and expressionist references. Watercolors were among his preferred painting techniques. 1965 his complete works completely on a retrospective during the 8th International Biennale in São Paulo ( Bienal Internacional de Arte ) was shown. The art of science has his paintings in three phases divided: 1922-1923 expressionist, cubist 1924-1929, 1927-1934 surrealistic.

His poetry has not yet appeared in individual works, but scattered tangible in magazines and anthologies. Partly also posthumously.
