Ismoil Pik Somoni ( Tajik Қуллаи Исмоили Сомонӣ / Qullai Ismoili Somonij; Russian Пик имени Исмаил Самани / Pik Imeni Ismaila Samani ) is the highest mountain in Tajikistan and the fourth highest of the Pamirs. Sometimes, lying in the PRC massifs of Kongur and Muztagata are not counted for Pamir but to Kunlun. Then the spades Ismoil Somoni would be the highest mountain in the Pamir.

History

In the Soviet Union, he was the highest mountain in the country. He was from 1932 to 1962 Pik Stalin (Russian пик Сталина / Pik Stalina ), named after Joseph Stalin, and 1962-1998 Communism Peak (Russian пик Коммунизма / Pik Kommunisma ). The current name refers to the Tajik " father of the nation ", the Samanidenherrscher Ismail I ( Tajik Исмоил Сомонӣ / Ismoil Somonij ) back.

By 1928, the nearly 90 km away Pik Lenin ( 7134 m) was considered the highest mountain in the Soviet part of the Pamir. However, a calculation of the Soviet-German Alai - Pamir expedition under Willi Rickmers Rickmers still showed a higher elevation. Initially the Ismoil Somoni with the Ace of Garmo was identified; until 1932 was clear of further Soviet expeditions that there are two different mountains.

In 1933, a large Soviet expedition attempted the ascent of Pik Stalin. They had considerable difficulty because of the altitude and extreme cold; of the six climbers the top group could only Yevgeny Abalakow on September 3, 1933 to complete the first ascent. Expedition leader Nikolai Gorbunov had to give up just before the summit. A climber had an accident during the ascent.

The mountain is one of five lying on the territory of the former USSR seven thousand meters peaks. The snow leopard Medal is awarded to the climbers who have conquered all five summits.

Three glaciers ( Fortambek, Moskvin and Walter Glacier ) located on the north side of the mountain.
