ISO 3166-3

ISO 3166-3 is an international standard, the leaked country code according to ISO 3166-1 standard defines and is the third part of ISO 3166.

If after 1974 states

  • In another aufgingen ( for example, the GDR into the Federal Republic of Germany )
  • Have fallen apart (for example, Czechoslovakia)
  • Changed their names ( for example, Upper Volta )

Be its abbreviation from ISO 3166-1 deleted and inserted with two additional letters in ISO 3166-3. Here are the first two letters represent the original country code from ISO 3166-1 and the last two letters of the new country code from ISO 3166-1. If there is no clear successor to the original country, are the last two letters HH. In the case of Serbia and Montenegro, which as a state had the initials CS, 2006 CSXX instead CSHH was established because CSHH has already been used for the former Czechoslovakia.

Examples:

  • The German Democratic Republic ( DD) joined the Federal Republic of Germany (DE), thus ending their existence. Thus, in ISO 3166-3 is the country code of the German Democratic Republic DDDE.
  • Czechoslovakia ( CS) split into the Czech Republic ( CZ) and the Slovak Republic ( SK). Thus reads in ISO 3166-3, the country code of Czechoslovakia CSHH.
  • Upper Volta ( HV) changed their name in Burkina Faso (BF ). Thus, in ISO 3166-3 is the country code for Upper Volta HVBF.

In databases with historical (mostly statistical ) information valid entries can be made by appropriate changes of the invalid keys again. The original coding is understandable, and the current assignment (CS as CSHH or CSXX? ) Is clearly again.
