ISO 4165

A power port is a socket for connection to an electrical system, eg in a car, motorcycle (with 6 or 12 volts DC ) or Truck (24 volt).

Often there is a power port near the ashtray (see cigarette lighter). There may be a variety of electrical devices can be connected, either directly or via power adapter.

  • Examples of direct equipment to be connected: Searchlight, fan, warning light ( yellow all-round light), portable refrigerator.
  • Examples of devices that are connected via a voltage adapter: navigation device, laptop, MP3 player, mobile phone.

The actual board voltage or drive socket according to DIN ISO 4165 is smaller (12 mm diameter) as the cigarette lighter according to the standard SAE J563 ( about 21 mm diameter). The smaller version usually offers more secure contact. Some plugs are designed as a combination connector, they taper towards the front and can be used in both socket variants.

Almost always, the inner contact plus ( ) and the outer ground ( - ).

In most with a voltage of 12 V equipped cars power port is protected by an electric fuse with a maximum current 8-30 amps. However, the sockets in cars should not be overburdened, since the cable cross -sections used for connecting to the car battery typically 1 mm2, which would be permitted for a maximum current of only 13 amps, even if the fuse is rated for higher currents. Therefore, the connection is more suitable for short-term flows, such as a cigarette lighter or electronic equipment with a low current consumption, such as navigation devices.
