ISO-IR-165

ISO -IR -165 is a 16 -bit character encoding for Simplified Chinese, and is mentioned in RFC 1922, section 2.1. It is not ASCII compatible.

Each character is represented by pairs of bytes in the range 0x21 - 0x7E, whereby the coding can also be used in mail traffic. A total of 8,376 characters can be encoded, of which 7,609 Chinese characters. In addition to the Chinese characters coded character set also Pinyin, Greek, and Cyrillic writing, drawing frame, Hiragana and Katakana, and Zhuyin and various symbols.

The character set has been implemented in ISO -2022- CN, but never became widespread.
