The Isola San Giulio is an island in Lake Orta in Piedmont, in the municipality of Orta San Giulio.

History

Your name goes back to a miraculous Greek named Julius, who is said to have liberated the island in the 4th century of dragons and snakes. The silhouette of the island is dominated by the powerful Benedictine monastery ( a former seminary ) and the Basilica di San Giulio, which was built by the Bishop of Novara in the 9th century.

Attractions

The center of attraction in the Basilica is a magnificent Romanesque pulpit of black marble, decorated with large reliefs of battling mythical creatures, eagles and saints. In the crypt with the bones of San Giulio with gold mask to rest in a glass coffin.
