Isopentane, 2-methyl butane or systematically even methylbutane is an organic chemical compound. It belongs systematically to the alkanes. It is one of three structural isomers of pentane (n- pentane, isopentane, neopentane ). Isopentane accordingly has five carbon atoms and has the molecular formula C5H12. Isopentane is a highly flammable, boiling even at slightly elevated room temperature liquid.

Production and representation

The preparation is carried mainly by catalytic isomerization of n -pentane.

Properties

The flash point is -57 ° C, the explosion limits are 1.3 to 7.6 vol - % isopentane in the air. The ignition temperature is 420 ° C.

Use

Isopentane is used as a solvent for fats and oils and for the preparation of isoprene and insecticides.
