Isopentenyl pyrophosphate ( isopentenyl -PP short or IPP) is a biomolecule, which is similar to the isoprene. Also attached on the fourth carbon atom of the molecule, a pyrophosphate.

It is produced via the mevalonate pathway and on the biosynthetically Methylerythritolphosphatweg. These synthetic routes are described in more detail under the isomer of IPP, the dimethylallyl pyrophosphate, cholesterol biosynthesis and the Methylerythritolphosphatweg.

Isopentenyl pyrophosphate is used in organisms for the biosynthesis of terpenes and terpenoids or can be converted to dimethylallyl pyrophosphate by the IPP isomerase. Next can be prepared from 2 units IPP and dimethylallyl a farnesyl pyrophosphate.

The amino group of the nucleoside adenosine is converted by means of tRNA - isopentenyl with isopentenyl pyrophosphate to N6- isopentenyladenosine.
