Isoxathion is an active ingredient for plant protection and a chemical compound from the group of isoxazoles and Thiophosphoric.
Representation
Isoxathion can be obtained by reaction of Diethylchlorthiophosphat with 3-hydroxy -5- phenylisoxazole. The latter is obtained by reacting Hydroxymethylacetophenon with nitric acid and sodium hydroxide.
Properties
Isoxathion is a pale yellow liquid that is practically insoluble in water.
Use
Isoxathion is used as an insecticide belonging to the group of the phosphoric esters. It was first introduced in 1972 in Japan by Sankyo under the trade name Karphos and used mainly in citrus fruits. It acts by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. Under alkaline conditions, it is unstable and decomposes to form 3- hydroxy-5- phenylisoxazole. Isoxathion is not approved in the European Union as an active ingredient. It is not included in plant protection products that are approved in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
