Istalif

Province

Istalif or Estalef (Persian استالف ) is the capital of the district in the province of Kabul in Afghanistan, about 18 kilometers northwest of Kabul.

It was initially founded by Alexander the Great under the name Istafil. Istafil comes from the Greek and means " wine ", a kind of " wine city ". The name, however, has changed throughout history. From Istafil - (Persian استافيل ) - was Istalif. The name change seems to have been completed with high security shortly before or after the Islamization of Afghanistan to the first millennium.

The sound shift or the palindrome favored the name change of the city, so the name Istalif not mean " wine " today. Because " bunch of grapes " is in Farsi Angur and "wine" May and May

In the city Istalif lived in 1979 about 30,000 people. The city lies on the so-called " Afghan Wine Route ", which also Charikar, Kudaman and Deh Sabs belong. According to reports, the Taliban have destroyed many vineyards in the region.

The city Istalif is known for their wine production and its ceramic and Kelimherstellung.

Pashto: ولسوال, Woloswal or Oloswal (People's Authority ) manages the district Istalif.
