Istanbul Cooperation Initiative

The Istanbul Cooperation Initiative ( english Istanbul Cooperation Initiative ( ICI) ) was launched at the 2004 NATO summit in Istanbul, founded in 1994 as a complement to the Mediterranean Dialogue to life. The ICI includes the states of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

The goal is a security cooperation between NATO and countries of the Middle East. The ICI is in line with NATO's Partnership for Peace and the Mediterranean Dialogue (MD). You should take into account the security requirements of the 21st century. The ICI is available to all interested nations of the Middle East open.

The main activities are in the areas of:

  • Preventing the development and spread of weapons of mass destruction
  • Fight against terrorism
  • Education and Training
  • Participation in NATO exercises
  • Promote the military cooperation (interoperability)
  • (civil ) disaster prevention and coping
  • Support for military reform
  • Prevent cooperation on border security to illegal transfer of drugs, weapons and people
