The İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi ( German: Istanbul Technical University ), commonly called İTÜ or University of Technology, is a technically oriented university in Istanbul. The İTÜ 1773, during the reign of Mustafa III. , As " Mühendishane -i Bahr -i Humayun " founded ( Engineering School of the sultan's navy) for the training of professionals for shipbuilding and for cartography. It is the world's third- oldest technical university and one of the most famous educational institutions in Turkey. İTÜ received in the QS World University Rankings in 2009 ranked the 108th worldwide and 1st throughout Turkey in the fields of Engineering / Technology. Many graduates of Istanbul Technical University have received grants and awards from the TUBITAK. Many graduates are also members of the Academy of Sciences in the United States, Great Britain and Russia. The university basketball team, ITUSpor is, in the Turkish Basketball League Division II, the University offers 39 undergraduate, 144 graduate colleges, 13 departments, 346 laboratories and 12 research centers. The ratio of students to professors at the İTÜ is 12:1.

International perspective

23 engineering departments are accredited by ABET İTÜ ( Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ). The Faculty of Architecture is accredited by NAAB ( National Architectural Accrediting Board) and the Maritime School is accredited by IMO. A minimum score of 213 in TOEFL CBT, or a successfully passed test of English language proficiency is a prerequisite for enrollment on bachelor, master or doctorate courses at the İTÜ. According to QS World University Rankings, the Istanbul Technical University is one of the 200 best universities in the world in the field of technology and engineering, and is the top university in Turkey.
