Istanbul University

The University of Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul Üniversitesi ), with more than 100,000 students and 5,000 academic staff of one of the largest and most prestigious universities of Turkey. The University is a member of the network of Balkan universities, exchange agreements exist among others, since 1998, with the U.S. University of Virginia 's College at Wise.

History

After the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmed II on May 29, 1453 these three days later gave after the Friday prayer the command to establish a Madrasa. Then each sub-areas of the Hagia Sophia and the Zeyrek Mosque were (then Pantokratorkloster ) turned into a madrasa in the same year. These two Madrasa be regarded as the foundation stone of the University of Istanbul. They were transferred to the completion of the Fatih Mosque in 1470 in the Fatih Sultan Mehmed complex.

Although a decision establish a university was sought in the European sense of July 21, 1846, there were several incidents that delayed the establishment ..

It took until 1900 before the Darülfünun ( "House of Science "), its activity could actually absorb. Today's administrative building in the central campus, located in the district of the district Fatih Beyazit, until 1923 was the headquarters of the Ottoman War Ministry. After 1923, the Turkish Republic was proclaimed, the Ministry was transferred to the new capital of Ankara and leave the building with the facilities around the Darülfünun. 1933 Darülfünun was closed and re-established by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as a University of Istanbul, in the now all previous devices have been combined.

The historic buildings in the central campus as the Rektoratsgebäunde, the main entrance, the eastern side entrance and the two buildings adjacent to the main entrance were built in the years 1865-1866 by the French architect Bourgeis.
