Isthmus of Corinth

The Isthmus of Corinth is an isthmus at Corinth. It forms the only land link between the Peloponnese peninsula and the rest of the Greek mainland. In addition, there are only a toll bridge connection at Patras.

Since ancient times, this place was not only used for crossing to Peloponnesus by land, but also to shorten the shipping lanes of a sea ( Saronic Gulf ) to the other (Gulf of Corinth ). Even Thucydides reports that the isthmus was used to grind ships from one to the other side ( see Article Diolkos ). End of the 19th century, a channel was at the narrowest point of the isthmus (approx. 6,4 km wide ) built the Corinth Canal.
