István Abonyi

István ( Stephan) Abonyi [ iʃtva ː n ɒboɲi ] ( born August 20, 1886 in Budapest, † June 5, 1942 ) was a Hungarian chess player and chess official. He spent four years as President of the World Correspondence Chess Association IFSB, the forerunner of the ICCF.

Abonyi studied law and worked as a lawyer in Budapest. When his father - a doctor - died, he could live on the site. After that he worked only for chess.

Chess players

Abonyi enjoyed playing blitz games. Between 1914 and 1924 he was considered one of the strongest flash player in the world. OTB chess he played 1905-1910, predominantly on master tournaments in Hungary. With black he preferred the opening of the Budapest Gambit. In 1907 he finished in the Hungarian Championship in Székesfehérvár behind Leó Forgáčs shared second place.

Also in correspondence chess, he had success. He won in 1936 in an international match against the French champions Gibaud. After he took in a simultaneous match against more than 100 opponents in 1935, he was for some time as a world record holder in this discipline.

Chess functionary

Abonyi was President of the Hungarian Chess Federation. He represented these in the FIDE, he also organized national and international chess tournaments. From 1935 to 1939 he was president of the International Correspondence Chess Federation IFSB. During this period, the stage for the introduction of a world championship were asked in correspondence chess. On the IFSB meeting in August 1936 to put a commission to prepare this. A year later, the IFSB in Stockholm decided binding to host a remote Chess Championship. Because of the Second World War, the first World Cup was in 1946 advertised.

Chess Author

From 1917 to 1919 and again in 1922, he worked as an editor of the Hungarian chess magazine Magyar Sakkvilág. In addition, his articles have been published in various international chess newspapers.
