István Bittó

István (Stefan ) Count Bitto of Sárosfalva ( May 3, 1822 in Sárosfa, Kingdom of Hungary, now Slovakia, † March 7, 1903 in Budapest) was a Hungarian politician and 1874/75 Prime Minister of Hungary.

Bitto studied law and joined the legal government service. During the revolution of 1848/49 he was a revolutionary and member of the Reichstag. He fled after the defeat of Hungary in 1849 out of the country, but returned in 1851 back again. From 1861 was Bitto for the Liberal Party Ferenc Deak deputy in the new Reichstag convened.

After the compromise with Austria Bitto was 1869-1872 Vice President of the Lower House of the Diet and served 1871/72 as Minister of Justice in the government Menyhért Lónyay. On 1 March 1874 he was appointed by King Ferenc József prime minister. The office he held only to March 2, 1875, when he had to give Béla Wenckheim. In the era of Kálmán Tisza (1875-1890), he was one of the few former liberal oppositionists. From 1899 until his death was a member of the Bitto magnate house.
