István Dobi

István Dobi [ iʃtva ː n dobi ] ( born December 31, 1898 in Szőny, † November 24, 1968 in Budapest) was a Hungarian communist politician and Minister and President.

Political career and climb to the Minister

Dobi belonged as worker's son in the 1920s, first at the Social Democratic Party. In 1936, he joined the Smallholders Party. During the Second World War he was active in the anti-fascist resistance movement.

In 1945 he became a deputy in the National Assembly and Chairman of the Group of Smallholders Party. On 4 February 1946 he became Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet of Ferenc Nagy. In November 1946, he assumed the office of Minister of State. From May 31 1947 to December 10, 1948, he was again Minister of Agriculture in the Cabinets of Mátyás Rákosi and Lajos Dinnyés.

In June 1947, he was Chairman of the Smallholders ' Party, which he left in 1948, however, to join the Hungarian Communist Workers' Party.

Prime Minister and President

Dobi was on 10 December 1948 as the successor of Dinnyés Prime Minister. This office he retained until his replacement by Rákosi on 14 August 1952. Additionally, he was from 1949 to 1960 Deputy Chairman of the Patriotic People's Front. 1951 to 1952 he was also Chairman of the United Agricultural Council.

On August 14, 1952, he was chosen as successor by Sandor Ronai as Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus to the President. As such, he was re-elected in 1957 and 1963. As president, he supported the efforts of depositing the popular uprising of 1956.

1962, the International Lenin Peace Prize and in 1967 the title of " Hero of Socialist Labor ", he was awarded.

Dobi remained until April 13, 1967 at the office of the President and was then replaced by Pál Losonczi.
