István Dobó

Baron István ( Stephan) Dobo of Ruszka (* 1502 in Szerednye, today Середнє, Ukraine, † 1572) was a Hungarian soldier and the captain of the castle in the successful defense of the castle of Eger against a Turkish supremacy in 1552.

Life

Dobo Istvan was born in 1502 as son of Domokos Dobo and Zsófia Cékei. He had five siblings, Ferenc László Domokos, Anna and Katalin. On October 17, 1550, he married Sára Sulyok and had two children, Ferenc and Krisztina, with her.

(: Eger German ) transferred in 1549 to him the command of the castle of Eger was. In 1552 it came to the siege by the Turks, as detailed in the novel "Stars of Eger " by Géza Gárdonyi described. With a crew of only 2100 ( including many women) he defended the castle successfully against 80,000 Turks, the first major defeat of the Ottoman Empire.

In gratitude, he was appointed by the Roman-German king and later emperor Ferdinand I, had kept to the Dobo during the disputes over the Hungarian throne, rewarded with the castles of Déva and Szamosújvár in Transylvania. 1553 he was appointed Voivode of Transylvania. Because Transylvania was separated in 1556 from the Kingdom of Hungary, he received to compensate the castle of Léva in today's Slovakia.

Accused of treason at the king, he was imprisoned for several years in the castle of Bratislava and died in 1572 shortly after his release.
