István Gergely

István Gergely ( born August 20, 1976 in Dunajská Streda, Czechoslovakia) is a Hungarian water polo player.

The 2.01 m wide Goalkeeper began in Czechoslovakia with the water ball. With Gergely Cub Scouts in 1996 and 1997 Slovakian champion. About Italy and Spain, he moved to Budapest, where he plays for Domino BHSE, the water polo club Honved. With this club he was Hungarian Champion in 2003 and 2004.

After he had completed 130 caps for Slovakia, the Hungarian -born players took to the Hungarian nationality and served from 2003 as a replacement for keeper Zoltán Szécsi in the Hungarian national team. In his first major tournament he became world champion and 2004 he was in the team of Olymiasiegers of Athens.

After the second place at the World Championship in 2005 Gergely was no longer active in the national team. Shortly before the 2008 Olympics, he was nominated again for the national team. In Beijing, he was part of the squad that won the third Hungarian Olympic victory in a row.
