István Küzmics

István Küzmics (also: Štefan Küzmič, Stevan Küzmič; * 1723 in Strukovci, † December 22, 1779 in Surd ) was a Protestant pastor, teacher and translator in Hungary. He is not related to Miklós Küzmics.

Küzmics was born in Prekmurje. In Sopron ( Sopron ), Raab (Győr ) and Pressburg ( Bratislava ), he successfully completed higher education. He was pastor and teacher in the two Slovene-speaking villages Tschobing ( Nemescsó 1751-1755 ) in the northern part of Vas county and Surd ( 1751-1755 ) in the county Schomodi.

In the 17th and 18th centuries numerous Slovene families settled from the Vas county in the Somogy county. According to some researches three counties ( Csurgó, Nagyatád, Marcali ) are known, in which originated sixteen Slovene settlements.

He also wrote both catechism and school books and translated the New Testament ( Nouvi zakon ali testamentom, Hall 1771). The translation of the Gospels by István Miklós Küzmics and laid the foundation for the prekmurische literary language. In his preface, which is significant in cultural and ethnic terms, he also writes the following:

" You, who reads the holy Slovenian book of the New Testament into your native language, or will ever read times: legally gratitude to the goodness of your God, but the book, which is a more precious treasure than silver and gold, Thou shalt in your language understanding and act according to the will of God. "
