István Mészáros (professor)

István Mészáros ( born December 19, 1930 in Hungary) is a political philosopher.

Life

István Mészáros studied philosophy at Georg Lukács. In 1949, between his time was threatened with de-registration after he Lukacs publicly defended against attacks from the Hungarian Communist Party. After the fall of the Hungarian government by the USSR in 1956 Mészáros Hungary had to leave. Mészáros had always advocated a socialist transformation of society, but against a Soviet bureaucratic dictatorship.

First, he taught at the University of Turin. In 1959 he moved to England, where he held positions at Bedford College, London University, the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and finally at the University of Sussex. From 1972 to 1977 he was Professor of Philosophy at York University in Canada, and then returned to Sussex. There he held for 15 years the Department of Philosophy.
