The aircraft carrier Cavour ( ID: 550) is the flagship of the Italian Marina Militare.

History

After much planning, the Italian shipyard Fincantieri on 22 November 2000 was awarded the contract for a small multipurpose aircraft carrier to replace the aged helicopter carrier Vittorio Veneto and is intended to supplement the previously single carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi until about 2020. In the summer of 2001, work began on the modules of the ship that were assembled from the end of 2004 in La Spezia, Genoa and La Spezia. The trial began on 22 December 2006, on 27 March 2008 the ship was handed over to the Italian Navy, and to the putting ( "Full Operational Capability - FOC " ) was held on 10 June 2009 in Civitavecchia instead.

After originally the name of Luigi Einaudi and Andrea Doria were talking, the new aircraft carrier was christened with the name of the first Italian Prime Minister Cavour. The longer name Conte di Cavour was, among others, the lead ship of a battleship class ( 1910-1947 ).

Interpretation

The 244 meters long, about 27,000 tons of displacing Cavour is designed as a multi-purpose vessel. The flight operation is conducted on a 220 × 34 m large flight deck. V / STOL aircraft start by going up to 12 ° forward flight deck ramp. The flight deck has 8 aircraft parking positions and six heliports and 2 aircraft and 2 ammunition elevators. The 134 m long and 21 m wide hangar ( 2,500 m²) can accommodate 12 helicopters or 8 aircraft (even more). As a rule, no more than 16 combat aircraft and 8 helicopters on board. Contrary to initial plans, the amphibious capabilities of the aircraft carrier were significantly limit on landing docks finally abandoned altogether. Instead, the hangar can be due to a ramp at the rear used wholly or partly as a Ro-Ro garage and thus up to 100 light vehicles or 24 or 50 medium heavy vehicles ( battle tank ) record. About ramp, hangar and aircraft elevators additional vehicles can be accommodated on the flight deck and transported there when needed. The Cavour offers an on-board hospital with two operating rooms, an intensive care unit and several other facilities.
