Italian Episcopal Conference

The Italian Episcopal Conference ( Conferenza Episcopale Italiana it., CEI ) is the official meeting of Italian bishops. The Italian Bishops' Conference, representing all regional episcopal conferences and has its headquarters in Rome. She is a member of the Council of European Bishops 'Conferences ( CCEE) and sends a representative to the Commission of the Bishops ' Conferences of the European Community ( COMECE).

Task

Guided by the principle that every bishop appointed by God is the responsibility of apostolic succession, they must fulfill their duty as vicars of their communities. Therefore, you are the successor of the apostles and need to fill as a College under the direction of the Roman Pontiff office. The Episcopal Conference is subject to the uniform provisions that are set out in the Code of Canon Law (CIC).

History

The thought of an Italian Bishops' Conference first came on in 1946. But Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini could, Archbishop of Palermo, Pope Pius XII. only in 1951 persuaded to allow the establishment of an Episcopal Conference of Italy. Thus the way was clear for a first meeting in January 1952 in Florence. Since then, there are regular meetings. 1954, a statute was first adopted.

First, the conference but not included - unlike today - all the bishops of Italy, but only has the President of the Regional Episcopal Conferences. These regional bishops' conferences had already been approved in 1889 by the instruction Alcuni Arcivescovi by the Holy See.

During the Second Vatican Council, it came in 1962 to the first general meeting of Italian bishops. In 1964 the Italian Bishops' Conference has been institutionalized in its present form. According to the 1965 renewed their statutes belong to all the bishops of Italy.

Structure

The main organ of the Italian Episcopal Conference is the general assembly, of their decisions are made and monitors their execution. It occurs at least once a year together, it can also special meetings are convened. Other governing bodies are:

Permanent Council

The Permanent Council is composed of the Bureau and the Chairman of the Regional Episcopal Conferences of the 16 church regions of Italy: Abruzzo -Molise, Puglia, Basilicata, Emilia -Romagna, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Sardinia, Sicily ( see Sicilian Episcopal Conference ), Tuscany, and Umbria TRIVENETO.

In addition to the Permanent Council includes all Presidents of the Episcopal Commissions.

Unlike almost all other Episcopal Conferences of the chairman is not elected by the bishops, but since 1959, appointed by the Pope, who is at the same time as Bishop of Rome Primate of Italy. Also, the Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference is not elected, but appointed by the Pope.
