History

The Accademia Navale owes its existence to the work of Admiral Benedetto Brin. As Secretary of the Navy, he ordered the consolidation of the Navy schools of Naples and Genoa, which had trained the officers of the navies of the kingdoms of Naples and Sardinia - Piedmont before the unification of Italy (the school in Naples was founded in 1735 in Genoa in 1816 by Admiral Giorgio Des Geneys as successor founded in Villafranca in Nice 1762 naval Academy ).

The Naval Academy originated in the late 1870s, immediately south of the port of Livorno on a plot on which was written in the 17th century, the Lazzaretto di San Jacopo. The new Academy was inaugurated on 6 November 1881. She soon became the best and most prestigious military academy in Italy. However, over many decades, she was also known for its often exaggerated discipline and toughness. In 1913, we expanded it to the site of the former Lazzaretto di San Leopoldo. From 1923 to 1926 in the facilities of the Naval Academy and the Officers School of the new Italian Air Force was placed. Until the late 1990s, when this was also the Leadership Academy of the Navy, were trained at the naval staff officers. It now has its headquarters in the Arsenal of Venice.

From war-related reasons you moved the Naval Academy in July 1943 to Venice and then to Brindisi, where she remained until 1946. After Allied air raids, some buildings of the Academy in Livorno had to be almost completely rebuilt. On this occasion, some new buildings and extensions were added. Overall, the Academy is today a 215,000 square meters along a stretch of coastline south of the port of Livorno.
