Ivalo

Ivalo [ ivɑlɔ ] ( Northern Sami Avvil, Inari Avveel, Skoltsamisch Â'vvel ) is a place in Finnish Lapland. It lies on the River Ivalojoki 12 km south of its confluence with the lake Inarijärvi. Ivalo is the largest settlement and the administrative center of the municipality of Inari. Some 3,400 of the 7,000 inhabitants live in Inari Ivalo. This Ivalo is the largest town north of Lapland. 11 km southwest of the town is the Ivalo Airport, the northernmost airport in Finland.

Originally the village of Inari was the main place of the municipality. In the course of reconstruction after German Wehrmacht troops had almost all the villages burnt down in Lapland Lapland War 1944 during their withdrawal, Ivalo, however, developed the new community center.
