Ivan II of Moscow

Ivan II Ivanovich ( * March 30, 1326, † November 13, 1359 ) from the dynasty of Rurik was from 1353 Grand Prince of Vladimir - Moscow. He was a son Ivan Kalitas. His contemporaries gave him the nickname " the Gentle ".

After his brother and predecessor Simeon Ivanovich and his sons had died of the plague, Ivan II came to power in Moscow. From the Great Khan in Sarai him the Grand Duke dignity was granted. With that he stood up to his Russian domestic competitors Constantine of Suzdal, which had been supported in particular by the Republic of Novgorod.

Oleg Ivanovich (1340-1402) of Ryazan led a campaign against the still staying in the Horde Ivan. He suggested the troops of Moscow and captured the Grand Duke. Oleg abused Ivan II physically and released him only after a ransom payment. His government remained weak. The domestic Russian unrest increased and Lithuania expanded his reign far to the east and himself took a Kiev. After a short reign of six years the rule of Moscow Ivan fell to the underage son Dmitri Donskoi. But the Grand Duke title went for a short time due to the minority of Dmitry Donskoy of Moscow to rival, Dmitry of Suzdal.

He was married twice and had two sons by his last wife, Dmitri and John, and two daughters. His grave is located in the Archangel Michael Cathedral.
