Ivan Martin Jirous

Ivan Martin Jirous (also known by his pseudonym Magor, born September 23, 1944 in Humpolec, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, † November 10, 2011 in Prague) was a Czech poet, critic and art historian. He was one of the central figures of the Czech underground.

Life

Ivan Martin Jirous, born in 1944 in Humpolec, was the initiator of the musical group The Plastic People of the Universe whose prohibition was one of the reasons for the Charter 77 by the regime.

Jirous was married to Věra Jirousová who also wrote a series of texts of the Plastic People. He was a friend of Vaclav Havel, who more than once in his prison reflections mentioned him Letters to Olga.

Ivan Martin Jirous died on 10 November 2011 at the age of 67 years.
