Ivan Mauger

Ivan Mauger OBE ( born October 4, 1939 in Christchurch, New Zealand ) is a former New Zealand track athlete. He focused particularly on the long track and speedway sport. He is considered one of the most successful track athletes ever. In addition to Tony Rickardsson he is the only one who was able to win six titles at the Speedway World Individual Championship. In addition, he was three times long course world champion.

His first professional speedway denied Mauger in the late 1950s, when he went during the boom Speedway in New Zealand, which was triggered by success of Ronnie Moore and Barry Briggs, to England. There he was obliged by the Wimbledon Dons, a speedway club in the first division, was at first but with little success. First, he went back to New Zealand. His breakthrough came when he was obliged by the Newcastle Diamonds in 1963 and 1966 for the first time reached the final of the individual World Cup and finished fourth. The first title win then succeeded him in 1968.

In 1984, he finished his career. Today, he is still active as a promoter for the race.

For his athletic achievements Mauger was 1979 and MBE 1989 Order of the British Empire. From the readers of two important journals, he was elected Speedway rider of the century. In addition, he was named Athlete of the Year in New Zealand in 1977 and 1979 and was allowed to participate in the torch relay for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
