Ivan Šarić

Ivan Evanđelist Šarić ( born September 22, 1871 in Dolac in Travnik, central Bosnia, † July 16, 1960 in Madrid, Spain) was a poet, translator, theologian and Archbishop of Vhrbosna (Sarajevo).

Life

Ivan attended elementary school in his hometown and adjoining the Jesuit gymnasium in Travnik 1882-1890. After leaving school he entered the archbishop's seminary and was ordained priest on 22 July 1894. First active in the community Pastoral he then studied at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Zagreb and received his doctorate in 1898 as a doctor of theology.

On April 8, 1908, he was appointed by Pope Pius X appointed auxiliary bishop in Vhrbosna and at the same titular bishop of Caesaropolis. He was consecrated on 28 May 1908 with the Archbishop of Vhrbosna, Josef Stadler. Co-consecrators were Paškal Buconjić OFM, Bishop of Mostar Ratko Peric, and Marijan Markovic, OFM, Bishop of Banja Luka. His motto was: veritatem et Caritat ( " truth and love ").

As Archbishop Josef Stadler on December 8, died in 1918 Ivan Šarić was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese. On May 2, 1922, he was named by Pope Pius XI. Archbishop of Vhrbosna (Sarajevo) and he was enthroned solemnly. Over 25 years as Archbishop and Metropolitan, he headed the archdiocese, founded many new churches, let churches and schools to build, especially young people of school to train. He was founder and editor of the Catholic weekly newspaper and created a translation of the Bible in Croatian language.

As a supporter of the Ustasha he had to leave his archdiocese and the country shortly after the end of World War II, he emigrated via Austria, Switzerland to Spain.

In 1957 he was placed in a nursing home in Madrid, three years bedridden he died almost 89 years on 16 July 1960 of a pulmonary embolism; he was buried in the cemetery Cementerio de Nuestra Señora de La Almudena. His final resting place he found on 26 April 1997 in the Church " St. Joseph's " in Sarajevo.
