Iván Szelényi

Iván Szelényi ( born April 17, 1938 in Budapest) is a well-known Hungarian sociologist and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi ( NYUAD ). To Szelényis research interests include social inequality, stratification, poverty and ethnicity.

Training

1960 Szelényi received a M. A. in Economics from the Corvinus University of Budapest in 1973 and a Ph.D. in philosophy and sociology, and in 1990 a Dr. Sc. of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Professional career

After his graduate Szelényi worked first as a researcher at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (1960-1964), before joining the Institute of Sociology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ( 1965-1967 ). There he took in 1967 to the post of Scientific Secretary ( 1967-1970 ), but then was promoted to Head of Department for Regional Sociology of the Institute ( 1970-1975 ). 1975 Szelényi left Hungary for a visiting professorship at the University of Kent (England ), and then was appointed professor at Flinders University in South Australia ( 1976-1980 ), where he was the Foundation Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology. Thereafter Szelényi was appointed professor of Sociology (since 1985, Karl Polanyi Professor of Sociology ) at the University of Wisconsin -Madison ( 1981-1986 ), but later went to the City University of New York ( 1986-1988 ), on which he the Director of the Center for Social Research and head of the sociology program of the graduate school there was. In 1988 Szelényi again and became a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles ( 1988-1999 ), where he chairman of the Department of Sociology was also temporarily (1992-1995 ). In 1999, he Szelényi a final appointment at the Yale University, where he received the William Graham Sumner transmitted Professor of Sociology and later retired. Finally Szelényi is since 2010 the Foundation Dean of Social Sciences at New York University Abu Dhabi.

In addition Szelényi works as an editor for the European Sociological Review ( since 2000), the Journal of Comparative Family Studies (since 1969), social forces (since 1999), Szociologia Szemle (since 1991 ) and Theory and Society ( since 1987). In the past, he was editorial for the American Journal of Sociology (1987-1989), the American Sociological Review, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Sociology (1983-1986), Easter European Politics and Societies (1989-1999), the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (1976-1993), Sociological Forum (1987-1992), Szociologia (1972-1973) and Telos (1981-1983) worked.

Personal

Iván Szelényi is married with Valeria Vanilia Majoros, with whom he has three children. Szelényi has U.S. citizenship, but currently resides in Abu Dhabi.
