Ivan Vazov National Theatre

The National Theatre " Ivan Vazov " ( Bulgarian Народен театър " Иван Вазов " / Naroden teatar Ivan Vazov ) is a theater building in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. It is named after the writer Ivan Vazov.

Location

The National Theatre is located in the square between the streets Djakon Ignatius ( Bulg Дякон Игнатий ), Ivan Vazov ( Bulg Иван Вазов ) Slawjanska ( Bulg Славянска ) and Georgi Benkowski ( Bulg Георги Бенковски ). Front of the theater extends the garden city of Sofia.

Building

The building was near the former Tsarist palace in Sofia, Bulgarian National Gallery today built by the project of architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner the Younger. The building was completed in late 1906 and the first performances took place on January 3, 1907.

1923, the theater was during a performance severely damaged by fire. The following conversion and extension after fire damage was completed according to the plans of the German architect Martin Dülfer and Kiril Tschoparow 1929. During the bombing of Sofia (1943 /44), the building was again badly damaged and renovated in 1945. The last major reconstruction took place 1971-1975, as a special hall for chamber music was built.

2007, the facades, the roof and the decorative elements have been renovated and renewed their gold cover.
