Ivar F. Andresen

Ivar Frithiof Andresen ( born July 27, 1896 in Kristiana, today part of Oslo, † November 6, 1940 in Stockholm was a Norwegian opera singer ( bass ), who had been developing since the mid-1920s to one of the greatest Wagnerian singers of his time. In Germany he was known by engagements at the opera houses of Dresen and Berlin as well as appearances at the Bayreuth Festival, where he also used the spelling Ivar Andrésen.

Life

Ivar Andresen grew up in the neighborhood of the same age later opera singer Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962) in Oslo. He studied in Stockholm and later in the style of education school of the Bayreuth Festival in Wagner's son Siegfried Wagner and in Berlin at ). He made his stage debut at the age 23 in 1919 as Pharaoh in Aida at the Stockholm Opera. There he was engaged from 1921 to 1925, before he went to Dresden from 1925 to 1931 and from 1931 to 1931 to Berlin. He also sang from 1928 to 1931 at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden (London) and the British Glyndebourne Festival (1935, 1936). In 1930, he was the first Norwegian who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in New York - as Daland in The Flying Dutchman. He has appeared in New York until 1932. Besides the Wagner roles he played well buffo roles, especially in Mozart operas.

He married in 1920 and Greta had a son with her Toralf. Illness affected his career early and he died - yet unexpected - 44 years. From Ivar Andresen are numerous LP recordings - as a concert and lieder singer - receive, which appeared again recently as CDs.

His brother was the baritone Henry Alf, his nephew of the politician Thorvald Stoltenberg ( born 1931 ).

In Norway, he is also known by the brand throat lozenges IFA manufacturer Nidar: Their box adorn his portrait and his with the date Dresden, 5 11, 1930 provided recommendations for singers, speakers, smokers and athletes.

Bayreuth Festival

Ivar Andresen looked at the Bayreuth Festival from 1927 to 1936 with, where he stood out as a permanent occupation of Gurnemanz ( Parsifal ). In his field, he moved there from Ludwig Hofmann (1895-1963) and Josef von Manowarda ( 1890-1942 ).
