Ivar Smilga

Iwar Tenissowitsch Smilga (Russian Ивар Тенисович Смилга, Latvian Ivars Smilga; * 20 Novemberjul / December 2 1892greg at Aloja, Governorate of Livonia, .. † January 10, 1938 in Moscow) was a Latvian revolutionary, an economist and member of the Left Opposition in the Soviet Union.

Later, he was a leader of the Opposition. In 1927 he was expelled from the party and exiled in the West Siberian Narym. In 1929 he surrendered, in 1932 he took the oppositional activity together with Ivan Smirnov again. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 1938 but executed without public trial in prison.
