Ivry-la-Bataille

Ivry- la -Bataille is a commune with 2546 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Eure in the Haute-Normandie region. It belongs to the district Evreux, in the canton of Saint -André -de- l'Eure and the Local Government Association, Val d' Eure et Vesgre.

Geography

Ivry- la -Bataille is located on the eastern edge of the department of Eure in the Eure River, 64 kilometers west of Paris and 18 kilometers northeast of Dreux.

History

On aerial photographs traces can be seen from several buildings. The buildings were surrounded by straight ditches and can not be dated without prospecting. Most origins of such finds from Gallo-Roman times, but they can also be from the Iron Age or medieval date.

The first Seigneur of Ivry- la- Bataille was Raoul d' Ivry ( † after 1015). His wife Alberède who built the castle. The Tower of London to have been built according to the same blueprint. The castle was built in 1119 by Louis VI. occupied by France, in 1193 by Philip II of France and 1418 by John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. The castle was built in 1424 on the orders of John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford looped. 1449 Castle Wall were further destroyed by Jean de Dunois after a long siege by British troops.

Before the battle of Ivry was the town of Ivry- la -Chaussée. After the royal army had the Holy League under the command of Charles II de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne (1554-1611), defeated IV of France on March 14, 1590 under the command of Henry, the town of Ivry- la -Bataille was renamed (French bataille means " battle ").

1793 received Ivry- la -Bataille as Ivry in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government. During the Revolution, the village in Ivry- la hauteur was renamed.

Population Development

Least inhabitants, the town had in the year 1800 (724), since the congregation grew and in 2006 had the highest ever number of residents ( 2653 ).

Since 1981, a partnership between the cities Ivry- la -Bataille and Laudenbach in Germany.

Culture and sights

Ivry- la -Bataille is nationally represented with two flowers in the Conseil des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ). The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

To commemorate the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, took place in 2010 Exhibitions, concerts and tours of the year. A resident Calvados distillery dedicated to the king a Calvados places ( cuvée Henri IV).

Structures

The so-called Maison de Henri IV is a house from the 16th century. It is privately owned and was registered in 1932 in the Additional List of Monuments historiques (historical monuments ).

The castle dates from the 10th century. It is called Château d' Ivry or Château d' Alberède. It is owned by the municipality in 1990 and classified as a monument historique ( classé MH). Since 1968 the club d' archéologie d' Ivry- la -Bataille ensures the preservation of the ruins.

Roger d' Ivry founded in 1070 a Benedictine monastery. Over the years the monastery had 47 abbots and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. 1669 the monastery joined the Congregation of the Maurists. During the French Revolution it was dissolved. The Romanesque entrance, an arcade and a statue of the 12th century were classified as historic monuments in 1932. The remains of the monastery are in private ownership.

The Gothic church of Saint -Martin dates from the 15th century. In the 17th century, the roof of the church was renovated after a hurricane. It belongs to the municipality and in 1958 historiques in the additional list of registered Monuments ( inscrit MH). In the church there is a stone statue of the Virgin and Child, which dates from the late 15th or early 16th century. It was founded in 1974 as a protected historical monument. The also listed baptismal font dates from the 16th century. The basin shows ornaments of vines with lions and snails. At the church you can still see the inscription from the revolutionary period: Temple de la raison et de la philosophie ( " temple of reason and philosophy ").

Economy

In the 19th century the town for the manufacture of fine leather goods was known, there were nine tanneries. In addition, musical instruments, combs, billiard balls and shoelaces were made. There were three corn mills and two Lohmühlen for the production of oak bark. Today, there is a plant for the manufacture of telephone cables. Tourism has grown in importance, there are three campsites on site.

The train station of Ivry- la -Bataille was in the 1870s from the railway line Elbeuf - approached Dreux Compagnie du Chemin de Fer d' Orléans à Rouen ( " the railway from Orleans to Rouen society "). The railway line was from 1891 the Chemins de Fer de l' Ouest ( " railroad the West" ). It was closed in the 20th century and turned into a voie verte. The Voie verte ( "green way") is used as a cycling and walking path.

The municipal area protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Pork ( Porc de Normandie), poultry ( Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cidre de Normandie and cider normand ) apply.
