Izmail

Ismail (Ukrainian Ізмаїл; Russian Измаил / Ismail, Ismail Romanian, Turkish İşmasıl or Hacidar ) is a Ukrainian city on the Danube. It is the administrative center of the Rajons Izmail, but is itself no part of this Rajons represents, but is under Oblastverwaltung.

History

The Genoese built a fortress here in the 12th century, which belonged to the Principality of Moldavia to 1484. Sultan Bayezid II conquered the fortress, and from 1484 to 1812, the city and the fortress were part of the Ottoman Empire. They were conquered on 6 August 1770 by the Russians and stormed and destroyed after the re-occupation by the Turks, on 22 December 1790 by W. Alexander Suvorov; after re- Turkish occupation of the town and fortress on September 26, 1791 were taken for the third time by the Russians.

From 1812-1856 and 1877-1917 the city belonged to the Russian Bessarabia, where a part of the Russian Danube fleet was stationed. Ismail was the case in 1810, founded near the city Tutschkow ( Тучков ), united by the Treaty of Bucharest in 1812 under the name Ismail.

The fortifications of the city were razed in accordance with the Treaty of Paris in 1856. From 1856 to 1877, from 1918 to 1940 and during the Second World War 1941-1944 Ismail belonged to Romania. 1940/41, and from 1944 it belonged to the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union and since 1991 on the independent Ukraine. Initially, it was the capital of the Oblast Izmail that dissolved in February 1954, the Odessa Oblast was incorporated. During the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia 1940-1941 the place end of 1940 got a rail connection through the still existing railway line Arzys - Ismail.

Geography

Ismail is located in the southeast of Odessa. In the south of the city lies the Kilijaarm, the northern mouth of the river Danube, which forms the border with Romania. To the east lies the Jalpuhsee and Kuhurluj Lake and to the west lies the Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
